Did you know? There are more than 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s. Locally, there are more than 50,000 individuals living with this disease and some 200,000 caring for those with Alzheimer’s. If you or someone you love is among those individuals, then you know first-hand just how devastating this disease can be.
Though education and awareness around Alzheimer’s has improved greatly over the past few decades, there is still no cure for the disease. That’s why the team members and residents at Claridge Court continue to advocate for the organizations and causes that support Alzheimer’s research, including The Longest Day.
What is The Longest Day?
The Longest Day is an annual event sponsored by The Alzheimer’s Association that helps fundraise for and spread awareness of the terrible disease. Purposely intended to coincide with the Summer Solstice, the day of the year with the longest amount of daylight, as well as Alzheimer’s and Brain Health Month, The Longest Day combats the darkness caused by Alzheimer’s through participation in activities that bring us joy.
This year, The Longest Day falls on Sunday, June 20.
How You Can Get Involved
You don’t need to be a resident of Claridge Court in order to participate in The Longest Day events and activities. You can register your own event or see what is already happening in Prairie Village. The best part about creating your own Longest Day event — if you so choose — is that you can center it around one of your passions and choose to do it safely in person, or hold it virtually and invite friends, family and neighbors from across the country.
And if you’re searching for ideas, the Alzheimer’s Association has wonderful suggestions for different ways you can host virtual events.
Help Spread Alzheimer’s Awareness
Whether or not you are able to join an event, there are still a few easy ways to help spread awareness for Alzheimer’s and brain health month as well as The Longest Day. The first is through social media. By sharing your own photos and stories or re-sharing those of friends and family, you not only help spread awareness while remaining physically distanced, but also have the opportunity to connect with other individuals who may have similar experiences with this disease. If you choose to post on social media, be sure to include the hashtags #TheLongestDay and #ENDALZ.
Another great way to help spread awareness? Wear purple! Purple is the signature color of the Alzheimer’s Association and while you can show your support by wearing purple throughout the month, it is especially encouraged on The Longest Day. Our team at Claridge Court will be sporting purple all throughout June.
